WHO IS JOSHUA DIXON?
Joshua Dixon is a Chicago-based photographer who studied at the Maine College of Art and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art. His work primarily uses self-portraiture to reflect on the 2007 pitbull mauling incident that continues to shape his life. These experiences have inspired him to tell stories and raise awareness about often-silenced issues such as mental health, ableism, medical devices, surgical practices, self-deprecation, and racial discrimination. He includes himself and others who feel marginalized due to unapologetic flaws.
In his practice, Dixon critiques the world he often feels displaced in due to his facial impairments. He performs in front of the camera, persevering through his lived trauma to capture its lasting impact. Through abstracting his skin, altering spaces, gestural performances, and the infliction of violence, Dixon cathartically releases his emotions. This method allows him to create a space where both he and his audience can engage in conversations about societal issues.
